We can do many things on the web and it is long since we started to buy things on the web. We usually make a purchase without going out and talking with clerks in the shops. Making a purchase, which used to be one of the activities popular in the communities, is now done on the personal computers or smartphones. There were a lot of opportunities for us to talk with friends or clerks in the shops before online shopping started to prevail. At the supermarkets or the convenience stores clerks are always conveying or trying to convey some things (even if those things are simply for profit). However, if we go out for shopping less often, we will cease to communicate with clerks. In communities where the trend of nuclear family has been increasing we will lose interaction with others except for family members This undoubtedly promotes our isolation in the community.
Whether we go to the real world or not, each of us has to build firm opinions in order to communicate with others. Simply admitting others’ opinions blindly will not mean real communication. In fact, it is a very personal and solitary task to fully understand others’ ideas and then to make up a new thought. If we are with others, it would be easier to organize an idea together; however on the web we have to judge, make up and express our own idea all alone.
We can express freely what we have thought on the web. The very freedom can make those who want to post their own opinions on the web spend their time in reflecting in solitude. The more willing wer are to speak out, the longer it will take to reconsider different opinions. This is how social techonology can make us more isolated.
